Charlie, the Denver Zephyr did break 9900's speed record (running "uphill"
from Chicago to Denver to boot) in 1936 before it was introduced to
service. Unfortunately, I'm at work now and don't have the date or speed
handy. If I remember right, it was abbreviated to a 5-car consist for the
run.
