My recollections are that when they were "worked" (90% of the time), traps
and doors were latched for use by passengers and not opened/closed from stop
to stop. They were always the "smoker". Cummins diesel (to provide 72 volt
DC lighting) was very reliable and but doesn't explain why WSMTD bought
"Siamese" Detroits in the MK abortionated rebuilding of the E-8/9's in '73.
Air-started (at 130-140 psi main reservoir pressure!!!!) Detroits provided
480 volt 3-phase AC for HEP (heat, lights, air conditioning). These were
later replaced with Cummins diesels with battery operated starter motors.
