Scott: Great question and (as always) there are more than just one
answer. Rupert references my CB&Q Vol #3. On pages 116-117 there are 4
shots of (as I call them) the "Kansas City" VO-1000s. Most, but not all
of the 4 stack VO-1000s were assigned to the St. Joe Division, with most
working KC. It appears that the KC locos had the horn on the top front
edge of the cab, facing forward. It is a short horn so in HO scale I
have used Detail Associates #AH-173 - Air Horn "Blat" Type Single Chime.

As you can see in the photos in Volume #3, there is abox that sits
directly in fron of the cab on top of the hood. In HO scale, I have used
Custom Finishes by Bob Rzasa #B-149 Cab Signal Box. It looks very close.

Also look in ZEPHYR #43 on page 12 you can see that these details on
#9364

Now here is where it gets a little crazy for the modeler. Look on pages
#12, 13 and 17 in my CB&Q Vol #1 and page 59 of Al Holck's Burlington
Route Color Pictoral #1. The single stack VO-1000s, mostly based at
Cicero, do not have the horn on top of the cab. In the photo of #9372 on
the top of page 13, you can see the horn is mounted on top of the hood,
just in front of the small window in front of the fireman. I have photos
of VO-1000s as early as 1948 with the horns in this location, again on
the single stack locos.

I have 1 Builders photo of a new VO-1000 #9352 and the horn is in neither
location. It is not a very good photo, but there is no horn showing
anywhere.

So, once again, it all depends on which locomotive and where it was based
and when (what year) you are asking about. As an example: Stewart's
model of #9365 - I have a shot of #9365 in Des Moines, IA on 11-22-47
with a single stack and (hold on) the horn mounted on the hood just in
front of the small cab windows. It is centered in fron of the windows.
Of all of my VO-1000s photos, this is is only loco where the horn is
centered on the hood.

Go to Holck's book and on page #58 #9365 is in KC (that is a clue) with
4 stacks and the horn on top of the cab. The date is 10-8-60.

Does anyone on the List have info on when the 17 VO-1000s were
retrofitted with the 4-stack exhaust?

Anyway, I hope all the above is helpful and not too confusing.
