Here is the explanation from the Second Diesel Spotters Guide:

Model: LWT12
HP: 1200
Cyl: 12
Engine: 567C
Period Produced: 1956
Number Units Sold: 3

Two demonstrator Aerotrains were built with 1001 spending several months in 1956 leased to NYC and operating Cleveland-Chicago revenue schedules. Late in 1956, 1001 made tests on the Santa Fe, then operated as the UP City of Las Vegas in the summer of 1957. Demonstrator no. 1000 operated New York-Pittsburgh revenue schedules on PRR in 1957. Both were returned to EMD in 1957 and were later sold to Rock Island as RI nos. 2 and 3. The other Aerotrain-type unit was RI 1, built originally to power RI's Talgo Jet Rocket. The Talgo and the two Aerotrains ended their days in Chicago commuter service. In 1966, RI donated one Aerotrain each, with locomotives, to the museums in Green Bay and St. Louis, having scrapped no. 1 and the Talgo cars.

Hope this helps!
