Thank you Dave Lotz, Karl Rethwisch and Ed DeRouin for responding to my
question about the fan trip book and the fate of No. 5632. What a shame
that circumstances would cause those engines to be scrapped. When I was in
high school in the early 60's I made several trips out to Galesburg with my
family to visit my great-aunt. At that time S-4 Hudson 3006 was on display
inside a fence at the CB&Q station, and the agent gave me the key to the
gate so I could climb up on the engine ("Just be careful and stay off the
tender"). I've always been partial to Milwaukee Road's F-6 Hudsons (F-6
being the unstreamlined class, vice the streamlined Hiawatha F-7's) but I
gotta admit the Burlington's Hudsons were better looking. Thank God the BN
people never got the bright idea to make a few bucks by turning 3006 into
razor blades. I understand there is a group trying to restore 3007 to
operating condition - where is that engine located, and how is the group
doing?
