Ed Pavlovic asked about the color arrangement on the 3 color light signals.
The yellow "top", green "middle", red "bottom" pattern dates from CB&Q
days. I don't know if this pattern was used universally, but virtually all
of the intermediate signals west of Lincoln on the Denver line were 3 color
light, and had this pattern in the 60's. The 3 color lights north of
Hannibal to Mark had this pattern also.
Someone else asked if searchlights were used only in CTC territory. Not
necessarily. Searchlights were used on the ABS north of Savanna as far as
Winona Jct. They were also used extensively in the ABS territory across
Iowa, and you wouldn't have encountered any 3 color lights except for a few
of the intermediates west of Red Oak, and north of Pacific Jct. in CTC
territory. The Table Rock line had searchlights also, on the ABS between
Napier and Table Rock, and these were "approach lit".
