Ray, In my opinion the Durango scenery is far superior to the Cumbres. May great photo ops, as well. We were visiting an aunt in Farmington, NM, so no experience with the hotels. Rich G --Original Me

In 2008 we did a trip from Chicago via St Louis and other places to the far SW reaches of Colorado (Mesa Verde state Park) and came back along the CB&Q main line from Fort Morgan to Chicago via Buda.

Ray, I am more of a fan of the Cumbres and Toltec. It is more of a mountain RR with distant vistas while the D&S is a water level route in a canyon. I feel the best direction is west bound from Anton
