RupertI don't think they would have been used in "specials"..... This is all speculation on my part, but I think they were just provided to the furniture manufactures who loaded them up with goods go

I think that there were also some refrigerator cars built with double door sets that were designed to be loaded twice for the same destination. The NP had some cars that had a divider down the middle
