In July 1907, 20 "Furniture, transfer" cars numbered 40000-40019 appeared on
the roster for the first time (or at least they weren't there in May 1906).
The cars were very unusual in that, instead of the single door opening each
side, there were two separate pairs of 4' wide doors each side, with about 14'
of sheathing between the two sets of door frames
My research suggests that these cars had been rebuilt from a group of cars that
had originally been built at Aurora and St Joseph in 1890 for the CB&Q, as well
as for some of the subsidiaries (C&I 401-414, CB&KC 3001-3008) StLK&NW
5001-5009 and KCStL&CB 2042-2101). These cars had an inside length of 39' 5
1/2" and an inside height of 8' 9", and they were later classed in 1911 as
XF-2's (41022-41151, 41352-41365, 14175-41529 and 41530-41544)
The question is, what were these cars used for? The extra doors would have
enabled quicker loading and unloading, but where and why?
Any offers.
