Those cars would have been in use before the advent of mass 
merchandisers....   A typical small town pattern would combine a furniture 
showroom with a funeral parlor business.
The extra door would have allowed direct access to two different loads....so 
each car could carry four consignees' worth of furniture without having to 
touch a group
destined for another town.   Sort of an LCL car, I would imagine.
