You can never play too safe with lye, the stuff will eat thru your skin, and aluminum too if you make the mistake of soaking something in a pan or tray made of the stuff. It does do the trick though.

I have been using a solution of Red Devil Lye in a 5 gallon plasitc bucket of water - I start out by putting th water in first (hot water fro my tap) followed by the Red Devil. I let the lantern soak
