Hi Ray,
Thanks very much for your informative comments regarding cleaning old
railroad lanterns. Although I have been interested in railroads for over 50
years there are many things about each individual apparatus of which I know
virtually nothing. Old lanterns are one of them.
But, I have begun collecting several for display in my house. Please look at
the attachment of an old Armspear tall globe lantern and notice the brass latch
on the bottom. I need some information.
I think that latch holds the font and burner assembly firmly in place. Thing
is, I don?t know how to release it and don?t want to play around and possibly
break it. So, (1) does one place one?s finger under the raised portion on the
right and then just lift outwards until the brass portion clears the peg, (2)
or does one push the peg in until the brass latch can revolve freely and unlock
the font/burner assembly? Not even old railroad workers here know the answer.
Secondly, regarding the Adlake lantern, you mentioned the sprung assembly in
the chimney which fits down on top of the globe and holds it firmly in place. I
noticed that. My question is how does one remove it from the chimney for
cleaning?
Thanks for any information you can give me on these matters.
Smiles and best wishes,
John A. Swearingen

of Red Devil Lye in a 5 gallon plasitc bucket of water - I start out by putting
th water in first (hot water fro my tap) followed by the Red Devil. I let the
lantern soak for 1 to 2 days. Disassemble the lantern first, removing the
spring globe retainer, font, and any other removable items.
I then give the part a thorough rinse of cold water from my garden hose - use
rubber gloves and eye protection always. Dry the parts with my air compresser
and paper towels.
I then soak the parts in clean water, and scrub the lantern with BRILLOW pads.
Another rinse with cold water and dry the parts well.
I have 25 lanterns, and have used this process on at least half of them with
great success and results. This procedure was sent to me by someone either on
the KL&L web site or on one of the Lantern Yahoo groups.
