You can never play too safe with lye, the stuff will eat thru your  
skin, and aluminum too if you make the mistake of soaking something in  
a pan or tray made of the stuff.  It does do the trick though.  Years  
ago I had to clean some builders plates that were so caked with  
graphite that they were barely legible.  A soak in a lye solution  
cleaned them up nicely, and probably my drains too!
