I know this is a late reply on this subject.    Al Chione has offered many slides of the C&S in Wyoming.    I have quite a number (200+) of them (second hand).    Mostly steam but, some diesel also.

The other photos from mid 60's show red strips on the nose.  If the red had faded by '68 the black stripes would sort of be there with red also showing.   The '68 photo does not show fading paint.
