Minnesota Transfer Railway became Minnesota Commercial Railroad about 25 years
ago. Its main yard became the site of AMTRAK's Midway Station and an industrial
area in the late 70's. The general office building was razed in early 80's.
Minn. Com'l has taken over ex.BN(NP) trackage to Hugo, MN and ex. Milw. Rd.
south Minneapolis line along Hiawatha Ave. and uses the old Milw. Rd. high
bridge over the Mississippi River between Dt. Paul & Minneapolis. They handle
more cars now than the old M.T. ever did. M.T. was an interchanger between
Twin City railroads with industrial switching in the Midway area of St. Paul
and also New Brighton, and Fridley. IRM has one of their RS-3's. They also
SW-7's in later years. Now Minn. Com'l is known for their Alco fleet and
second hand big GE's.
