Grain hoppers came later than the early sand/cement hoppers and were of larger capacity because grain is lighter so large cubic feet were needed to meet GWR,gross weight on rail allowance. In fact the early larger cube CHs were used in more industrial or chemical products rather than grain. Gradually over time grain switched from 40 ft box cars to CHs. While that was going on trucking took away the vast majority of the grain business except for todays unit trains.
By 70’s the more or less standard CH was 4,750 cu ft. Capacity. Those cars are now retiring and CH sizes are 5,000 plus to new ones at 6,200 etc.
