CB&Q Livestock Car 58587D A photo from Richard Hendrickson’s presentation, Vintage Dating Model Freight Cars, presented at 2009 East Coast Santa Fe Modelers Meet. He commented: Though the paint was weathered, especially on the door, note that this CB&Q stock car was NOT dirty. Stock cars were steam cleaned after each trip; shippers would not accept dirty stock cars for re-loading. My Notes: No location or date but photo was taken in 1963 or later. AAR Class SM: This car is for transportation of stock on the hoof, and is equipped with roof, slatted sides and side doors, and single deck. With or without feed and water troughs. From Series 58000-59499. Outside length: 37’ 9”. Note in the January 1965 Equipment Register: Cars in Series 58000 to 59499 may be furnished equipped with temporary upper deck on application to agent. In such cases agent will make notation on live stock contract and way bill covering the shipment handled in car showing that car is equipped with temporary upper deck.
