The Burlington built the first of these 70 ton covered hoppers at Galesburg in 1940 then building shifted to Havelock for subsequent series. These were primarily in silica sand service at Ottawa,Wedron and Oregon,IL. Though many were also in cement service at La Salle,IL and elsewhere. Some were in bentonite service in WY.
But that return to and silica sand service stencil were not always strictly adhered to as I saw cars stenciled for cement service in Ottawa and Wedron.
Prior to the advent of these covered hoppers the silica sand business was primarily handled in box cars. Even into the 1970’s we handled bagged silica sand in box cars.
In 10 days at the BRHS spring meet I will be discussing these cars and the trains that handled them on the Fox River branch. You can still attend the day session by simply showing up and paying the day fee. Info. Is on the web site at burlingtonroute.org
