For anyone seriously interested in Chicago RR history if you go to google books or hathi trust and search on:
Smoke Abatement & Electrification of Railway Terminals in Chicago, 1915 issued by the Chicago Assoc. of Commerce(this was a who’s,who of RR offices in Chicago that were officially responding to a Chicago proposed ordinance to electrify the RRs).

I say serious because the book runs well over a 1,000 pages of fine print and hundreds of pages of fine scale drawings, statistics on car volumes broken into dozens of numerous categories, maps, etc, etc, etc. either prepare to zoom or use a magnifying glass,a lot. There is a chart of just switch moves between the Qs Western Ave yard and the coach yard, house 1 and 2. This is how detailed it gets.

In all that wonderful info. (About all RRs in Chicago)You will, after many hours of hunting, find a map that shows the Roosevelt Road Q roundhouse, etc, etc, etc and which includes what were at that time Q freight houses 1,2,3, and 4,5,6. These were not 1 and 2 that we grew up knowing but their predecessors.

My subset of page copies is currently loaned to another BRHS member with whom I am co-ordinating a (hopefully) someday article on the history of all the Q freight houses in Chicago. I say hopefully as our combined ages are just short of 150 and we are dealing with hundreds of pages of documents. Where were houses 3,4 5, and 6 ? hopefully someday the article will share that and more.

My page copies of the book were from a copy of the book from the University of IL library brought home to me by my daughter while attending probably 15 or more years ago.

Hol, Leo, Dave and All - Well, I'm going to show my "ignorance" on the Q in Chicago prior to 1900.... Up until now, I never knew the Q had a passenger locomotive roundhouse at Roosevelt Road as described by Leo.  That being said, then I agree with Leo and Hol that the location shows 1591 on the turntable at that long gone roundhouse which predates the Western Avenue facility. Even as I near my eighth decade, I'm still learning "something new" about the Q!  Perhaps, a future article in the BRHS Bulletin describing the various Q roundhouses and locomotive servicing facilities in Chicago including Cicero over the years might be in order - Louis

While it's clearly in Chicago, I would be inclined to agree with Leo that it may be the Roosevelt Road turntable.  I've seen one other photo taken there — it's in a file folder in my material now in storage in Naperville — and this looks like the same location.

Louis may be correct but pure speculation on my part would be to search for photos of the roundhouse at Roosevelt road that handled passenger equipment. It was east of Roosevelt where we all remember the REA building being located.

I seem to remember reading somewhere it was removed as a part of all the various relocations invoked with building CUS and the new freight houses.

Is the locomotive an early “Atlantic type”. Also does the tender have only three axles.

Dave - 1592 on the turntable most likely at the Western Avenue passenger locomotive roundhouse in Chicago.  Magnificence image! - Louis

Hi Folks,

Does anyone here have an idea of where this image may have been taken?  Taken after 1899 and 1913.  The water tank, the tall buildings to the right and the bridge to the left of the locomotive are clues/
