While it may be "needed", unless someone has some shop documents stashed away, it may be a mute point.  Both early F and E units which had a painted side panel had the unit number in !-inch letters beneath the "Burlington". Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver units also had stacked reporting marks at this location. If I had to guess, I would say it probably had unit class and painting date and location information.  It was not present on units that had been repainted.  My take on it. Jim Sandrin

On the Q's FT units, there is two lines of 1" lettering below the BURLINGTON on the sides of the units. The top line is the unit number with suffix. However, I cannot tell what the bottom line is from photos. It looks like it may begin with FT and maybe include the HP and something else, but most photos were taken too far away to be able to read this lettering upon enlarging it. BB #4 does not mention this lower line. This question was asked before on this list in 1999, but there wasn't an answer given. Does anyone have a photo of this lettering or know what it was? This is needed for an upcoming model run.
