I’m a 1960s GB&W modeler at heart, but am thinking of expanding my modeling horizons with a lash-up of CB&Q diesels — the GB&W’s interchange partner on the west end of the railroad. I’d kind of like to have a combination of two newer second-generation redbirds with an older first-generation blackbird, but in looking at online photos I’m not seeing many combinations of MU red + black locomotives.
Were they rarely run together, or is that just bias from the photographers of the era who would prefer to capture fresh lash-ups of new red & gray diesels as opposed to the older black? Or did the two actually rarely operate together? If so, what was the reason for that — was the tractive effort/gearing/horsepower generally incompatible for the types of trains the newer second-generation units would have been assigned to compared to the first generation? Or perhaps the older units which were still often used in through trains soon repainted after the new red scheme appeared? ______ Mark Mathu Whitefish Bay, Wis. _._,_._,_
