The Lincoln-Columbus, NE branch had lots of red & black mixed consists of GP and SD motors.

Were they rarely run together, or is that just bias from the photographers of the era who would prefer to capture fresh lash-ups of new red & gray diesels as opposed to the older black?  Or did the two actually rarely operate together?  If so, what was the reason for that — was the tractive effort/gearing/horsepower generally incompatible for the types of trains the newer second-generation units would have been assigned to compared to the first generation?  Or perhaps the older units which were still often used in through trains soon repainted after the new red scheme appeared?
