The box cab on the D&RGW was owned/used by a contractor… in addition to the former Sumpter Valley locomotive which D&RGW purchased, they also used two US Army changeable gauge diesels, one of which was later sold to the White Pass.

GE built a total of eleven 4-heel box cab locomotives in 1938/39.  The first five were all standard gauge 20-ton locomotives, two for Wisconsin Steel, and three for Lehigh Portland Cement. The next six were 23-ton, the first two 36” gauge for Ash Grove Lime & Cement, the rest standard gauge, one for Proctor & Gamble, three for Lehigh Portland Cement.

In 1961, on of the Ash Grove Lime & Cement locomotives was rebuilt and repainted for Smith’s Contracting, who used it when building the relocated line for the D&RGW due to the Navaho Reservoir.  Grandt Line made a kit to model the Smith’s Contracting locomotive.  The Grandt locomotive kit is available from San Juan Models.

Grandt/San Juan also offers a 23/25 ton GE end cab model in both standard and 3’ gauge. These were much more common.  In Colorado, Colorado Fuel & Iron had a  number of 3’ gauge examples, two of which were later sold to White Pass.  On Kauai, the Grove Farm tourist railroad has two of the end cab units, at least one of which came from Arkansas Lime.

As far as I can tell, the only narrow gauge internal combustion locomotive used on the Colorado Southern was a Plymouth model DL used to scrap the line, seen in a photo at Como.
