Some industries had regional warehouses where the car loads of whole products and or parts would go for distribution in the local area.  IE.  International Harvester had a warehouse on the Alley track in Aurora.  Even though the factories may have been close.  Same with John Deere had a parts house on North Broadway in Aurora.  I know Frigidare had a warehouse in Tampa, Fla.  And working for my Uncle we would call up for parts and they would deliver, by bus, at 5 pm in Palmetto Fla.  They got carloads in and they local furniture stores would go get truck loads of refrigerators, stoves and or washing machines.

Questions about dedicated service cars

I am going to use appliances as the example but it could be anything.

There were cars assigned to appliance makers like Hotpoint, Whirlpool etc. I understand the shipping part, the cars are assigned to the specific factory for loading.

What is murky to me is where do the cars go to be unloaded? I imagine a single consignee, let's say Montgomery Ward, could take quite a few out of a load, but what about mom and pop appliance stores?

Would a destination like Omaha wait until they had a load large enough to be cost effective?

Could multiple consignees have appliances on the same car?

Where would they be unloaded? The Burlington Freight House, some other warehouse?

Food stuffs seem a bit more straightforward as there were wholesalers and grocery store distribution for a particular brand.

But what about other stuff in stores like Procrorvand Gamble products. The Q has dedicated cars for that service too.

Thanks from an ignorant non railroader.
