Ricky,

We forget that the large national department stores (e.g. J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, and Sears, Roebuck & Co.) all had regional warehouses that served both their retail stores and catalog customers. They could easily take a car load or two at a time of appliances.

They also went to smaller retailers. This example from CB&Q Train 97's consist (Galesburg to Savanna) on July 2, 1966:

ATSF 31632 LB 40' PS-1 Box w/6' Door Opening. Built 1950. Class Bx-57. Youngstown Sliding Door. Series #31250-31749.

If a retailer had a warehouse that service stores in an area, it is a candidate for receiving carload quantities.

I sometimes laugh today about people are amazed when retailers offer same day delivery. When I moved to Kansas City in 1980, you could call either Penney's, Sears or Wards, and if the item was in stock, they would have it ready for you to pick up in an hour at their local warehouse. And they did not charge anything extra for that.

Questions about dedicated service cars

I am going to use appliances as the example but it could be anything.

There were cars assigned to appliance makers like Hotpoint, Whirlpool etc. I understand the shipping part, the cars are assigned to the specific factory for loading.

What is murky to me is where do the cars go to be unloaded? I imagine a single consignee, let's say Montgomery Ward, could take quite a few out of a load, but what about mom and pop appliance stores?

Would a destination like Omaha wait until they had a load large enough to be cost effective?

Could multiple consignees have appliances on the same car?

Where would they be unloaded? The Burlington Freight House, some other warehouse?

Food stuffs seem a bit more straightforward as there were wholesalers and grocery store distribution for a particular brand.

But what about other stuff in stores like Procrorvand Gamble products. The Q has dedicated cars for that service too.

Thanks from an ignorant non railroader.
