Since it’s 1949, steam was still active, and there  is a large coal tower just out of the picture. There is no sand tank on the wood tower atop the sand house, so it was removed and some point and dried sand from the sand house was piped to the coal tower and delivered from there. I’ve seen picture of coal towers that doubled as sand towers, and there are plans for such a coal tower in an old MR, complete with drawings of the sand pipes next to the coal chutes. I don’t know how sand was delivered to the drying house, or how raw sand was stored. Wider angle picture would help, as would pictures of the coal tower.

This is an image of the sand house I need to scratchbuild for my layout for Rochelle, IL. This is how it appeared in 1949.  I'm embarrassed to say I have no idea of how this worked and what type of equipment would be housed in the building.  I'd appreciate any information on how this process worked.
