Now I’m thoroughly confused on how to read the table.

 

There are no prior entries in the table giving number or class for 35000, 36000, 37000,  and 38000 series cars, just notations to indicate that they were renumbered or rebuilt with new numbers. Where are the initial class and build dates for the 35000, 36000, 37000, and 38000 cars?

The heading for the column containing 77300-77741 is labelled “renumbered from”. Therefore 78200-78699 were renumbered from 77300-77741.

I didn’t mention 37300-37799, so no confusion here. I wrote 77300-77741 from the third column to the right after 78200-78699. So were the 78200-78699 cars renumbered or not? Apparently 78556 wasn’t, and as Hol mentioned, has a reweigh date of 12-40. I think the 77300-77741 entry in the column referenced above is an error, and they were not renumbered as indicated in the second column after 78200-78699.

I haven’t researched the first use of the tri-colour herald so perhaps someone else know that answer.

 

As regards the car in your photo, I think you have the dates confused. 37300-37799 were built in 1909 by AC&F, renumbered to 77300-77741 in 1926 when BREX was established and then to 78200-78699 in 1927-8. The last renumbering was probably when they were rebuilt with steel underframes, etc.
