[CBQ] "Burlington Route" emblem, 1880s & 1950s

The black and white (and later red) rectangular logo was used “unofficially” from about 1880 and was formally adopted in 1884. At the time, it was referred to as “a distinctive mark” without a formal name, and later as “Standard Burlington Route Trade Mark”. It is commonly called the Burlington Route Herald.

Thanks for the interesting answer(s).  What comes to mind RE the late 1950s application of the color herald on freight equipment was the emphasis management placed on calling the system "Burlington" in that era.   A few years later there were color-insert ads in "Trains" along the lines of "I am a Burlington man" that showed lots of new red freight equipment.

As to the original appearance, Rupert's answer above mirrors what I found in the heritage section of the BNSF website.   They describe it as "BNSF's oldest emblem" or similar.
