I think that the design was changed to incorporate a red element in 1940.

The black and white (and later red) rectangular logo was used “unofficially” from about 1880 and was formally adopted in 1884. At the time, it was referred to as “a distinctive mark” without a formal name, and later as “Standard Burlington Route Trade Mark”. It is commonly called the Burlington Route Herald.
