I personally have added a number of the Broadway cars to replace Stewart and Accurail cars because of the finer details, but I realize this is a personal choice.  
 
Unfortunately I model between Savanna and East Dubuque, IL in 1969.  Not really coal country but there was considerable movement of Southern Illinois coal to the Twin Cities.  
 
While the C&S cars look great, I can find no evidence they were used system wide so I have not purchased any.  If such information would come available, that would widen their appeal.  

I supported Amarillo with a good number of the FW&D HC-1 covered hoppers but only because they along with Q-Connection, got the roof right where Intermountain did not.  All my FW&D cars got repainted into schemes that would’ve been in the Illinois sand service pool.
