These devices were most likely placed in loaded freight cars to record the time of high impacts. Think in terms of switching impacts in hump yards from less than needed Retarder applications and especially in flat switching yards from “kicking cars “. Also for slack action in trains running over the road.
When I was working on the RR there was from time to time scuttlebutt about impact recorders getting this crew or that one.
There is currently on ongoing project in the industry that records many aspects of what happens to a car while in transit using modern technology.

Now that I have alerted the two ladies that found it in the closet, they will probably try to find the location of the factory, where the family lived, if any are buried in our local cemetery and if any family members still live in New London.
This is the type of project that can be a lot of fun because there are so many different elements to the search. Somehow I also sense an article in our weekly newspaper when all of the information is collected. They will publish anything I give them.
