Great! Thanks, Leo. This helps a lot.

Don,
This is a general comment. If your thinking about the morning eastbound lineup at Aurora. Use the TT as your guide. The express trains making limited stops are generally 9 cars. The locals are 5-7 cars. Keep in mind each train has a power car on the west end. The weekday trains stayed the same size for the week but the weekend brought lots of switching on Friday night to prepare the weekend trains. That doesn’t mean there was no switching each evening as there was plenty to do to break down some evening trains and setup morning trains.
Also cars were set over from depot yard tracks and then power tacked on. And/or pulled or pushed up from the Hill yard and then power tacked on each morning.
The afternoon and evening trains had the odd stuff….. baggage cars to/from the REA spur near the depot. The Mt Morris mail cars got taken off the Oregon Turn and tacked onto an evening dinky. Then there was the wheel car going back to 14th st. And in no particular schedule through passenger equipment was shuttled on the Dinkies to and from the Aurora shops.
I’m not 100% certain but pretty sure the green/Tan 7100series cars were all retired by 1966. Photo research would confirm one way or the other.
Leo Hi Leo,
I'm modelling June 1966, using timetable #12. So I know when the trains are leaving, I just don't know what the typical consists would be. I know they would try to keep each train the same, but some would change from day to day based on equipment availability so it's not like an exact thing. I'm looking for what you would put together to stand back and say "yea, that looks right".
Thanks!
Don Winn Don,
What year or span of years are you modeling ?
Leo I've been pondering the question of how many cars I should have. If I have a maximum of 8 trains I could hold in the Aurora station at one time (keeping main 1 open), what would be a realistic mix of consists for those trains?
Thanks! Don Winn Thanks, Leo!
Don,
Here’s the quick high level overview.
The Aurora switch jobs brought the equipment to and from the depot/Hill yard. Hostler and helper moved locos into and out of Aurora roundhouse and the inbound/outbound tracks at the roundhouse. Road engine crews took power to/from Hill Yard and depot.
The “herder” was a switchman who worked solo lining power to/from roundhouse to Hill yard. Then spent balance of shift chalking cars at Eola.
Then there was the poor Aurora tower operator trying to keep all these moves plus through freights in three directions and Zephyrs all moving.
Steve, join right in when you’re ready😉
Leo Good tip. I have the tracks done for the Aurora station but haven’t settled on an operating plan yet. I’ve modeled the 3 mains plus 4 more tracks around the other platforms plus 2 storage tracks. I’m feeling compelled to load them up perhaps for the morning rush. If my hostler isn’t busy he could bring more trains in from the Hill yard (staging). The next ops session could be the evening rush and bring them all back. But I have learned that the time to buy is when they’re selling. Don Don,
Just model middle of the day. Run two and three car trains with nothing at the Aurora depot or Hill yard as it’s all in Chicago being serviced for evening rush.😎
Leo Oh, no. That's awful news....for my wallet! I can use at least 20 of them. Great news for Burlington Modelers!!! Dave | Rapido Newsletter Vol. 157 ©2022 Rapido Trains Inc. Having issues with seeing the entire newsletter in your email browser? Click here to view as webpage. |

| NEW! HO Scale Budd Gallery Cars - CB&Q/BN/Metra Versions Now that you have motive power options, why not announce the Budd gallery cars to go with them? Of course! The only catch is similar to the Commuter E8 Locomotives: we will roll out the full launch later this fall. Until then, there is still plenty to be excited about! Let's take a look at some of the prototype and features of each. |

Our first run will comprise the CB&Q, Burlington Northern and Metra versions. These are the Head-End Power versions. They will be the perfect match for your HEP E-units and F40s. But what about Milwaukee Road, Rock Island, and the Metra cars built in the late 1970s, you ask? Based on the success of the first run, we will see if it is possible to do those cars in a second run. Stay tuned to our upcoming newsletters for more information. |
