The mere _presence_ of marker lanterns on cabooses or the last passenger car
were themselves the marker in daylight. In sunny daylight you would not have
been able to see any light even if they were lit. At night they had to be lit.
Red flags were sometimes used in daylight. There was no requirement for markers
on the front of a train and there should not be any displayed.
A _marker_ denotes the REAR end of a train and shows other trains & employees
that the train is complete. That is, it has not left any cars behind on the
mainline in such situations as doubling a hill or bringing in a disabled car
for setout.
Diesels had built-in electric LIGHTS at the upper corners. These lights could
be turned on or off, could be adjusted to show white, green, or red; and could
easily be seen in daylight. These lights were normally used as CLASS LIGHTS
which are officially known as 'signals'. IE, white for an Extra train, green
for a section of a Regular Scheduled train that is NOT the last section. Dark
Class Lights signifies the last or only section of a regularly scheduled train
of any class (1st, 2nd, 3rd) except Extra. Only the FIRST unit of a multiple
unit loco (or multiple steam locos) should show the Class Lights.
IF the locomotive was being used as a rear end pusher (helper) on a train then
these built in lights should be turned on and adjusted to show red to the rear
because now the helper loco is the rear end of the train and thus displays the
train's marker. Similarly if light engines (no cars) are moving on the mainline
as a 'train', outside of Yard Limits, then they must display the red marker
light to their rear and would display white (Extra) class lights on the front.
The proper display of Class Lights and Markers is absolutely essential to the
safe operation of trains. People could be killed if improperly displayed.
