Rupert, The Burlington was a founding member of the Trailer Train car
pool. Trailer Train would provide the car which was 85 feet long.
The car number is the Trailer Train car number. CB&Q would
purchase and provide the car rack. The railroad would pay mileage and other fees for using the car.
According to the TTX Story Volume 2, the daily rates which were
set on September 16, 1960, were $10.00 a day for cars with
bi-level auto racks and $12.25 a day for tri-levels. This was
based on usage of 240 days a year. Once this agreement was
approved and put in effect, Trailer Train immediately ordered 600
85' flat cars with 471 to be equipped with auto racks by member
railroads. Trailer Train would collect the car charges with most of the rack revenue being returned to the member railroad who provided the rack. According to the TTX Story, these initial racks were expected to
see five years of service. The initial auto racks had no
cushioning which would cause damage to the vehicles being
transported. Newer racks developed over the next few years that
had cushioning to minimize transport damage to the vehicles by
train handling. The 1968 CB&Q Equipment Assignments offered by
the archives this past year shows this Trailer Train car is no
longer assigned to the CB&Q in 1968. The two volume TTX Story set is currently out of print, but I seen discussion that a second edition is being seriously considered that also includes corrections from the first edition. Bill Hirt On 1/30/2022 10:46 PM, Rupert Gamlen
