Way back in 1872, the dead tonnage issue of cars running empty on the return journeys was being addressed by the railroad industry, and one answer was combination cars able to carry diverse loads.

The Hannibal & St Joseph had over 700 of these cars by 1875, although some were later converted into ordinary box cars.
