When I was a fireman in the late 70’s we used a part of the building as our layover/bunkroom. Look at the first picture taken from Canal Street and you will notice a green door off the sidewalk. This led to the row of windows you see to the right of the door. That was our layover/bunkroom area.

Before the building was torn down I did go exploring the upper floors and found abandoned offices with lots of file cabinets stuffed with old files. Some maps and books found new homes, because on one of the upper floor rooms there were broken windows. Since the windows faced west snow and rain would enter if the wind was right.

I was in freight service when Crooks was torn down, but I heard the basement was a hiding place for feral cats, and when the wrecking ball got close they vacated in a hurry, but with difficulty as they were creatures of the night and the sun blinded them.
