James:

PNW resins makes a U23C shell, which is plan to use on an Atlas chassis. The only other option is the Brazil made Frateschi model (fully running), but it has an incorrect pilot, foreign couplers, and too narrow of a hood width.

Regardless, I am a big fan of the "slice and dice" projects. I'm doing a Great Northern BSB U33C right now, with a KV models resin shell....the pilot required substantial rework, and the battery boxes had to be added to, to make it a correct early phase unit. Plenty of fun!

THANK YOU for the photos, these are an INCREDIBLE help!!!

Concerning the car body, assuming you are planning an HO-scale version, the easiest way is to combine Atlas shells.  The Phase-1 U30C shell with the nose headlight is the best starting point. For the proper engine compartment, a U23B shell will give the proper 6-door configuration.  Section the engine compartments at the front of the radiators and behind the front air intake doors.  It sounds more complicated that it really is.  Once you have the shells in hand , it is easy to see what must be done. Included are shots of the engine compartment door arrangement, the engineer's side of the cab and front detail and a roster shot of the 5200 (aka 460) in Denver in 1972. Jim Sandrin

Hi Chris,

I'm definitely interested in following your project. Few people realize just how rare U23C's were - only 53 built for North America - 20 ATSF, 9 CB&Q, 5 LS&I, and 19 PC. So I doubt we'll ever see a U23C produced by one of the model manufacturers. That being said, they externally resemble the U30C, except they have fewer engine access doors. What are you using as a basis for your model and what else have you found to be major differences (other than the engine doors) between the CB&Q U23C's and a U30C?

Also, in regard to the trucks, if you are using an Atlas U30C frame, for example, are you planning to recreate the standard mounting tabs on the back of the truck side frames so they can easily replace the existing side frames of you base locomotive?
