The Chicago, Burington and Northern took over the route from Oregon to St. Paul. I was indexing that paper work in the Archives last week Galesburg to Savanna was a mixture of former roads and called the Pea Vine as were a lot of lines had Pea Vines. because of the curves and added parts. Sometimes "Air Line" was used for a straight line often by pass trackage. Also often a line was named for a major city along the route Steve in SC

Hi all: Re the "C&I Line" -- Technically the Chicago & Iowa ran from Aurora to an Illinois Central connection at Forreston via Rochelle, Oregon and Mount Morris built 1870-71. Oregon to Savanna came a little later as the Chicago, Burlington & Northern. The Burlington controlled both C&I and CB&N, which were consolidated into the main system by 1900 or so (don't have my notes handy). What was the C&I west of Oregon was cut back from Forreston to Mount Morris in the mid-1930s. I have no idea when C&I Line came into common use for Aurora-Oregon-Savanna but as bonus information do know there was an old tavern, the C&I Tap, operating in downtown Oregon when I was a kid. Perhaps Q-related saloons would be another topic to pursue sometime. Bill _._,_._,_ Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
