Tractive effort is more important than horsepower in low-speed coal drag service.  The SD24 was a high-horsepower locomotive for its time.  Lower horsepower SD7s and SD9s had essentially the same tractive effort as the SD24s and were the usual coal drag power on the Beardstown sub in that era.

Hello,

I would think the SD24's put their lugging power to work on the coal line between Galesburg and Centrallia. Thought all heavy Q power worked the coal fields. Please correct if wrong?

Mark : the assignments of the SD24 fleet (500-515)  was pretty consistent over time. When new, in 1959 and 1960, they ran in pure sets of 3 or 4 units.  Once the Q ironed out the initial electrical problems these units were prone to, they were mixed with other power, F-units at first and Turbo-charged Geeps as these came on line during the 1960s.  They were commonly seen on Chicago - Denver, Chicago -Twin Cities, Chicago- Kansas City trains.  After the U25/28Cs were delivered and running on the Lincoln- Alliance-Billings trains, the SD24s were occasionally seen in that pool also.  Due to bridge weight restrictions, the units were not used off the mainline, on branch lines or mixed with power on the C&S/ FW&D lines. They were also regularly seen in Pool service, especially the Cicero-North Platte pool with the Union Pacific until well after the BN Merger, into the late 1970s.  Jim Sandrin

I see Atlas has announced an HO scale CB&Q SD24... what type of trains / locations were these units typically found on Burlington Route?
