And don’t be one minute late or you get left. One night I had to walk from the roundhouse to departure yard !

Sometime in the very late 1960s or early ‘70s a  4-5 unit set of SD24s was assigned to #11811 making(most of time,if the hog law didn’t get the crew) the round trip from Cicero to Streator and return. But even with this power it was still a relatively frequent occurrence to double Wedron hill eastbound. They stayed on the job well into the late 70’s/early 80’s.

The reverberations under the I.C. Bridge when Steady Eddie opened them up was impressive.

Thanks for the reply!

I'm a late 1960s GB&W modeler first and foremost, but I've always been fond of the CB&Q's Chinese red paint scheme (it's my second-favorite red-and-gray paint scheme [wink]) — plus it was the GB&W's primary interchange partner on the west end of the railroad.  I've finally reached a point where I've got a modest GB&W model fleet and am thinking of perhaps adding a CB&Q lash-up to give a little more variety when I operate at my train club ... so I'm doing a little researching.

So by the mid-to-late 1960s a red & gray SD24/GP30/GP30 (or GP35s) lashup on a mainline freight would be prototypical... with perhaps even an older 'blackbird' GP in the mix for variety? Or were the black engines not often paired with the newer GPs and SDs because they were first-generation and assigned other duties by that time?

Mark : the assignments of the SD24 fleet (500-515)  was pretty consistent over time. When new, in 1959 and 1960, they ran in pure sets of 3 or 4 units.  Once the Q ironed out the initial electrical problems these units were prone to, they were mixed with other power, F-units at first and Turbo-charged Geeps as these came on line during the 1960s.  They were commonly seen on Chicago - Denver, Chicago -Twin Cities, Chicago- Kansas City trains.  After the U25/28Cs were delivered and running on the Lincoln- Alliance-Billings trains, the SD24s were occasionally seen in that pool also.  Due to bridge weight restrictions, the units were not used off the mainline, on branch lines or mixed with power on the C&S/ FW&D lines. They were also regularly seen in Pool service, especially the Cicero-North Platte pool with the Union Pacific until well after the BN Merger, into the late 1970s.  Jim Sandrin
