I'm a late 1960s GB&W modeler first and foremost, but I've always been fond of the CB&Q's Chinese red paint scheme (it's my second-favorite red-and-gray paint scheme [wink]) — plus it was the GB&W's primary interchange partner on the west end of the railroad.  I've finally reached a point where I've got a modest GB&W model fleet and am thinking of perhaps adding a CB&Q lash-up to give a little more variety when I operate at my train club ... so I'm doing a little researching.

So by the mid-to-late 1960s a red & gray SD24/GP30/GP30 (or GP35s) lashup on a mainline freight would be prototypical... with perhaps even an older 'blackbird' GP in the mix for variety? Or were the black engines not often paired with the newer GPs and SDs because they were first-generation and assigned other duties by that time?
