Peter-
Your great grandfather might have run the first train over the double track second bridge bu it wouldn’t have been the 1868 bridge.
A number of the spans of the 1868 bridge were reassembled as the Laramie Avenue viaduct over the Hawthorne (Cicero, Il) yard.   Another span was reportedly sold to be used as a bridge over the C&NW yard at Proviso, also near Chicago.

The first bridge that Louis shared with you was a single track bridge.  An image of the second bridge, (double-track)  is attached.  The work in replacing it was in completed in October of 1892.   The present bridge was completed in 2013.

Does anyone have a photo of the old railroad truss bridge that spanned the Mississippi River from Illinois into Burlington? Also,  was it a single track  or double track bridge?

I have been told that my Great Grandfather engineered the first train across the bridge!
