Peter - I've attached the earliest view I've come across yet of the Mississippi River Bridge at Burlington, IA. It's dated August 14, 1868.  The bridge looks to be a box truss type and it's single track. If you notice the tall smoke stack on the center swing portion of the bridge, it's for the steam-powered machinery used to turn the bridge. Best Regards - Louis
