Can anyone tell me the typical power assigned to PU and #83 on the C&I in the 60s and how big these trains were?
Bob,

How late in the 60's? The 1969 Operating Data Sheet for #83 lists car and tonnage rating by locomotive sets as 100 cars/4000 tons for 3 Units, 115 cars/5000 tons for 4 Units, 124 cars/6000 tons for 5 Units. So 124 cars would be max length and 6000 tons leaving Chicago. #83 picked up cars in Savanna, and the tonnage rating per unit set increased. Cars remained the same but tonnage was 100 cars/5000 tons for 3 Units, 115 cars/6000 tons for 4 Units, 124 cars/7000 tons for 5 Units.
