The locomotive is Colorado & Wyoming (owned by CF&I) locomotive number 102. It was an ex-UP 4-4-0, built by Brooks Locomotive Works in 1888. According to McKenzie’s book MOUNTAIN TO MILL, it was purchased for the C&W in 1901 by the C&S to take over switching operations at Hartville Junction in order to replace a C&S locomotive in use at that point. Checking a UP roster, there were at least three 4-4-0s sold to the C&S (UP numbers 649, 651 and 781) in 1901 and 1902. Ex-UP number 781 was sold to C&S in April of 1901, and it was the only one built by Brooks. The locomotive in the photograph is probably the ex-UP 781, but never say never. JIM E…
