Ray and Michael - Guess we ought to lay to rest some of the other "urban myths" about Q steam that still surface from time to time such as the O-1-A that was purchased by a southern Illinois hospital to use as a boiler.  It was supposedly lowered into the basement and bricked over where it still provides steam heat in wintertime.  Then, there's the O-5-A that was rolled over into a pit at Northwestern Steel & Wire and buried to provide scrap at some later date. My favorite myth remains the M-4-A supposedly lurking inside some farmer's barn in southern Illinois kept company by a herd of cows. Such myths get around, I've heard the same stories about V&T locomotives that Lucius Beebe had hidden away in old comstock mine tunnels. I think we'd have a better shot at finding the lost Treasure of the Sierra Madre than any of the above mentioned Q steam power. But, we can always dream..... Best Regards - Louis

WOW!!!  There's an M4-A in a barn in southern Illinois? Where is it? I would love to take some photos of it? I didn't know that any of the M4's were preserved. 

 

I did here that there are several Virginia and Truckee engines hiding in various tunnels in the Sierra's foothills out side of Reno, but no one has found them yet. 

 

What about the Treasures of the Sierra Madre? I saw the movie and wonder if it was found as well.

Charlie - You're right, pre-1900 historical images of the Q's Aurora-Chicago line are as rare as a M-4-A hidden away in a south Illinois farmer's barn.......

I've attached a post card view dated 1907 of the "Five-Eleven" dinky stopped at Hinsdale.  Note the mixed consist of wood passenger cars including the combine used for newspapers and express shipments. The small crates being unloaded might be chicks for a poultry/egg farm.

      ANY previously unpublished photos pre-1900 on the Aurora-Chicago line of locomotives, trains, and ROW.    There was a Chicago photographer named P.B. Greene who published a series of pre-Chicago fire stereopticon images….a few examples have surfaced in a series called “Views in Chicago and Vicinity” with Number 126 called “Gems at Riverside”.   They show the original single track bridge over the Des Plaines River c.1870 and a couple of other views.   There must be more such shots taken, likely with the photographer getting off the train, taking pictures, and getting back on the train to shoot the next town.   What a find they would be, especially if a few included some equipment and stations!!!

  

 Also seeking photos of the Track Elevation Project in Chicago.   Compared to other railroads, the coverage for the CB&Q is slim.   Only one very poor shot of the section west of Western Avenue has surfaced and a small number of Western Avenue-Halsted.
