Pete - It may be that the PZ was photographed at St. Joe, not Atchison, KS. Although the Atchison and St. Joe depots are similar in design (wonder if the same architect designed both?), there seems no good reason for the PZ to be in Atchison, unless it was on exhibition when new.  That would be a possibility per Bill Hirt's Email mentioning the motor car service from Atchison to Armour, MO, connecting with Q passenger trains on the St. Joe Division. Check the following web site:

Note the Q is not shown on the train board meaning that passenger service had been discontinued sometime earlier. Since the PZ looks so "shiny new" in the image, may be it was on exhibition.  The engineer's leather cap looks more 1930s than later.  Plus, the employee time table the conductor is holding sure looks like an oversize "horse blanket" style of the 1930s.

But, then again, like you say, may be the location is St. Joe.  Is there a list somewhere that gives all the exhibition stops with dates for the PZ? Best Regards - Louis

Bill,
I believe the line on the west side of the Missouri River was abandoned prior to the Depression. According to Overton, that was originally the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad that was formally absorbed into the CB&Q in 1908 . Overton reads like it was built to harass and interfere with Jay Gould's plans to extend the MP to Omaha.
I am looking at the April-May 1936 Passenger timetable and it only shows the stub from the Missouri side to Atchison.
Here is a photo of Atchison Union Depot (served the Q, ATSF, MP and RI):
It looks similar to the Union Depot in St. Joseph.
At the time of Pioneer Zephyr, the Q ran connecting Motor Car service from Atchison to Armour to meet all KC-St. Joe passenger trains. So it's possible it was at Atchison for some type of publicity tour/photo.

Bryan,

Atchison was on a line that branched off at Armour on the KC - Council Bluffs line on the east side of the Missouri River southeast of Atchison. That line proceeded to Rulo, NE where it connected to the line to Wymore. I am not sure that the PZ ever operated over that route. I wonder if the photo is not incorrectly identified. If your photo of the Atchison depot is correctly identified, it looks quite similar to the depot at St. Joseph, MO where we know that the PZ operated from for a number of years. Could the photo actually have been taken at St. Joe? Attached is a 1909 post card view of the St. Joe depot that looks very similar to the Atchison depot in your photo. Both have the high train shed structure.
