The interesting and unique pattern of paying was "interesting" to say the least. Ultimately everything got around to computing the pay total based on miles..Hours were turned into a mileage equivalent..which, back in the day was 12.5 mph. Based on the old railroad pay scale where 100 miles was a day with a minimum of 100 miles when you were called for duty. On runs of 100 miles or less your overtime began after 8 hours, but on say a run of 125 miles you would get the equivalent of 1.25 days. BUT on that same run your OT would not begin until you had been on duty the equivalent of 1.25 days computed by mileage..All the "tilmebooks" put out by various organizations ie BRT, ORC&B, BofLF&E would have a chart and table covering all this stuff and you would use that to compute your pay.
Even pay for various violations of the "contract" etc was converted to miles. I have a letter received back in the 50's with payment for staying at a NON STANDARD hotel because no rooms available at the regular place and the pay was calculated on the basis of miles run.
Maybe Leo with a little assistance from old guys with long memories could do a little Clinic on this stuff. Probably not much interest though from other than those octogenarians among us.

Thanks for the explanations of these terms. Having been a wage worker-plus-overtime all my life, being paid on a mileage basis always seemed very complicated!
