What I love about the photo is the background ! The commissary building and its supports fit just so between tracks. The equipment in 'C' yard and the Soo Line freight
House across the street. Very nice.

Thanks Louis for posting,

This isn't the photo that I saw, but it works (I couldn't post the photo I saw because it wasn't mine).

I believe you can see what I am talking about.  It is silver, and located below the 'L'  in BURLINGTON.  This looks like a fuel filter to me.  This may be a pre-merger photo, because the engine numbers are still in block-style lettering, and there is no number on the rear panel like BN applied to the E units.

I understand what Steve is  saying about mechanical features being different on different locomotives, so if this unit is equipped with some kind of filter, it may be a detail specific to this locomotive.

Thanks for posting this.

Glen/Steve - I can offer an attached/inserted image of "Q" E8 9976:

No 9976 at 14th Street coach yards, Chicago, IL, on April 23, 1970. I agree with Steve that mechanical details did change to some degree over its service life. Best Regards - Louis

It is similar to the E unit that had the Signal Head painted on the side.  Need a photo of the unit you are painting to verify the details as some units did not have the details others had

I saw a photo of a CB&Q E8 that was post-BN merger (but still in stainless steel/silver) that had what looked like an air filter or fuel filter on the right side underbody, behind the front truck and ahead of the fuel tank, and to the right of the front air tank.  The unit number was BN 9976.

I don't recall seeing this detail on any pre-merger units.  Was this something that was added to the underbody after 1970?

It clearly shows up on the un-skirted 9976, but I don't want to add it to any models if it was not a CB&Q feature.
