Leo..Thanks for your response...All the more reason for me to put out my little  "diatribe"...relative  to newspapers...even beyond commuter trains...into the over the road passenger trains and even branch line mixed trains...  One particular instance will be good for a few laughs...

I'm going out of town tomorrow to do a bit of what my wife used to call  "Ghost Railroading"...ie looking for abandoned rights t of way....We're getting to the  end of the "season" for such activities....Once the vegetation comes out its virtually hopeless to find anything...Spring has pretty well "sprung" here, but 4 of us will be making our last "hurrah" for the season.

Pete:

Those of us still reading a "hard" copy newspaper on the suburban commuter trains today are in the vast minority. Unfortunately those are usually the codgers like myself still riding and reading the old "rag". If you spot one or two people reading a newspaper in a full-up commuter car on the BNSF today you are seeing something out of the ordinary.

The younger folk commuting today are getting their news via their smart phones these days and they are not limited to viewing the local publications like the Chicago Tribune and the Sun Times on those phones.

I can remember the days when the conductors would pick up the papers left behind on the seats by the affluent business men who knew the papers would not go to waste. I can't recall the last time I have seen a conductor with a newspaper at the end of the run. Most of them also have their smart phones and they are quite a bit younger than this old commuter! Newspaper sales at the suburban commuter stations and at Chicago Union Station is almost non-existent.

So sad to say things have changed drastically concerning the "morning paper" on passenger trains, the ever changing electronic media has seen fit to make that icon now obsolete.

"It ain't what it used to be" for certain!  Thank God we are not getting any older, eh?

Leo..Thanks for the mention of the "morning paper"...I once wrote a piece for our local Lincoln Railfan's Club Newsletter entitiled  "The Newspaper as Currency"...I think I'll do it again "for here"...Anybody who was around the railroad business in the heyday of the passenger train will understand the subject...and I suspect that things have not changed much today as the topic as mentioned here regarding newspapers would still apply to the Suburban Train operation no matter where. trains are running.

To add to Dennis' comments about the Zephyr diner at 14th st coach yard.
It was the spot for breakfast after backing a commuter train to the coach yard for the brakeman
And engine crew. The mechanical dept guys also frequented the place. The bus stopped right in
Front of the door so it was a quick yard back to CUS if you're had a job "uptown" to get to.
For those dead heads going back to Aurora the westbound 8:30(or thereabouts, depending on time period) stopped at the cross work between A,B and C yards for the ride back to Aurora, etc .

The food was typical of any diner. The staff never lacked for a morning paper as most of the
trainmen made one or more part of the tip they left.

Group - Does anyone remember or enjoyed a meal in the Burlington Diner at 4183 South Halsted in Chicago? I'm inserting and attaching a post card image of the diner:

<CBQAdBurlingtonDiner4183SouthHalstedChicagoIL1947.jpg>

The backside of the post card reads:

A Unique Place To Eat- The BURLINGTON DINER- An Original Burlington R.R. Diner- 4183 So. Halsted St.--Chicago, Ill.- * Famous For Good Food *- Serving Day and Night Since 1939- For Ladies and Gentlemen- Phone: Virginia 7-9078

Was this an actual retired Q dining car?  The post card image indicates the back end was open platform. Does this diner still exist? Is the location any where near the 14th Street Coach Yards?

Hopefully, some of our Chicago Land members can give us the history of this diner and the car it was in. Best Regards - Louis
